Post-it Note #24
October 17, 2009
(This post-it note is part of a series on how to lead a simple life even more simply – with pictures for those easily distracted by words.)
Today, I will write in CRAYON.
I will change up my routine and break all the rules.
Instead of calling out sick, I will call in rich.
I will turn off the the tv, and turn on music.
But not rap music because that’s not music.
I will take off my watch and turn off my cell phone. I will smile and say Hi. Or say: “What’s up, dog?” because no one ever says that anymore.
I will carry cash. I will skip dessert and leave the difference as a tip. I will watch airplanes take off. I will bask in AWE.
I will eat with my hands, crush ice with my teeth, blow bubbles in my soda. I will take a two hour nap – and not feel guilty.
I will put the toilet seat down.
I will write the words I AM ALIVE! in marker on my bathroom mirror.
But not in permanent marker because that would be stupid and hard to clean.
I will spill over.
…
When was the last time you changed up your routine?
(Look for a surprise on Monday!)

Hey Brian! Very inspiring as always. We can change so much in our routines if we want to. I’m looking forward for what you are up tomorrow. Keep well.
Oscar
Loved this!! I have an out of town actress friend coming over for dinner. Today I won’t be intimidated by her ~ and serve her a great meal with lot’s of calories
I prefer colored pencils because it is easier to form words…and totally agree with the two hour nap and NOT using permanent marker – really, is there ANYTHING you write in marker that ever needs to be permanent?
I teach a class for teens, called “Brain Olympics” and one of the activities I ask them to do is to experiment with changing their routine behaviors. They change things like the order in which they put on their clothes, which hand they use to hold a fork or toothbrush, taking a different route to places they visit often, etc. One teen did his homework in crayon.
Every time we change a routine behavior/activity, we create new neural connections! Isn’t that cool!
@Ruth, awesome. To most my teachers, I *was* “Brain”. Funny how many of them mispelled my name (Brian).
@TexasHolly Hey, you!
Yeah, I agree about the colored pencils. Crayons are not match for my big man hands.
@bella Oh, I want some! Calories are where it’s at!
Haha
Hey Brian! How you doing man? Have a good weekend?
I loved these ideas, sometimes it’s great to just do everything different and have a bit of fun. It’s amazing how sour some people can be. They are like living zombies.
How bout doing a handstand in the middle of a busy shopping center
I did take a 2 hour nap yesterday – it was fantastic.
I love the one about music instead of TV, I try to do this once in awhile and it always makes me feel good.
Hey Papa.
Love the post it note.
I was thinking as I was making dinner for a friend today that the defenition of insanity is to repeat what we have always done and expect a different result. I may act insane but I am most decidely not. How about you? Did you leave the note for your beautiful wife on the mirror or yourself? How about reading a book from a genre you don’t typically read? Speaking for all women, thanks for putting down the seat!!
I love writing in crayon, even though I’m not a artistically blessed person! My fave is to grade papers (I’m a high school science teacher) in colored pencil or makers, it drives my kids nuts and makes me giggle!
