Post-it Note #5
June 22, 2009
Today, I will call out sick.
And not because it’s Monday.
Because that would just be cliche.
Today you will call out sick and take a day for yourself.
Too often we take time for our kids, our husbands, our dogs, and we fail take time for ourselves.
If you’re reading this and nodding your head and you’re a smug, self-centered junk soul, shame on you! Slap on an orange vest and sweep up some trash.
This is for those good souls who continuously put others before themselves. There’s nothing wrong with this, but eventually you must take time to refuel your own soul.
If only to keep giving.
So:
Today, see a movie, read a blog, read this blog, sip Veuve in the sun room, take pictures, eat blueberries, shop on-line, sleep in, cancel a dentist appointment.
Do all those things which you are too busy to do.
Or:
Sit. And soak up the silence.
The day is yours.
Claim it.

Wow! I took your advice before I even read this. I stayed up too late (after 3:30 a.m.) and then slept through my alarm. Daughter came in to wake me up after 9:00 a.m. So, technically, I did sleep in. To make the day even better, I will actually read my book while my kids are doing their reading time.
I do find this to be the case with most of my friends with young children. They are so busy doing things for their children and family that they forget to take time for themselves. But a little time for yourself each day is the best present you can give your children. It makes you a better parent, more relaxed and able to enjoy your children.
I am a firm believer in calling in well…for mental health. So important, yet so overlooked. The Norwegians have us beat on the work thing. Life should be about working to live, not living to work…or is that vice-versa?
H’mmmm… I just know I believe in taking care of one’s soul…most folks don’t.
